Essential Safety Tips for Cycling in Taiwan:
1. Practice Defensive Riding (Don't Assume Right of Way) In Taiwan, heavy traffic and scooters are the norm. Unlike in some Western countries, drivers may not automatically yield to cyclists. Always ride defensively. Even if you have the green light, make eye contact with drivers—especially bus and truck drivers—before crossing their path to ensure they have seen you.
2. Master the "Two-Stage Left Turn" This is a unique traffic rule in Taiwan. At many large intersections, cyclists are not allowed to turn left directly from the inner lane. Instead, you must: Ride straight across to the white/blue marked "Waiting Zone" (Hook-turn box) on the far right corner. Reposition your bike and wait for the light in that direction to turn green.
3. Beware of the "Door Prize" Roadside parking is very common (and often illegal) in Taiwanese cities. Be extremely cautious when passing parked cars. Keep a safe distance (at least 1 meter) from the side of cars to avoid being hit by a driver suddenly opening their door without looking.
4. Watch Out for Slippery Surfaces Taiwan’s frequent rain makes certain road features very hazardous. Be extra careful with: Metal expansion joints on bridges. Manhole covers and painted road markings. These become incredibly slippery when wet. Avoid braking or leaning your bike while crossing them.
5. Utilize Excellent Cycling Logistics Taiwan is a cyclist's paradise in terms of support: Convenience Stores: 7-Eleven and FamilyMart are everywhere, providing water, food, ATMs, and restrooms 24/7. Police Stations: Many rural police stations act as "Biker Stations," offering free air pumps and water.
